Summer heat in Wisconsin can make driving downright uncomfortable—especially when your car’s air conditioning is blowing warm air. If you’ve noticed your A/C isn’t keeping you cool, there are a few common culprits to consider.

1. Low on Refrigerant

The most frequent cause is low refrigerant (also known as Freon). Over time, small leaks can develop in the system, especially with the harsh winters we see here in Wisconsin. Without enough refrigerant, your A/C can’t cool the air properly.

2. Failing Compressor

The compressor is what moves refrigerant through your system. If it fails, your air conditioner won’t work. Signs of a bad compressor include strange noises, a lack of cold air, or the A/C clutch not engaging.

3. Electrical Issues

A blown fuse or faulty relay can prevent your A/C from functioning altogether. If your system isn’t turning on, it might not be mechanical—it could be electrical.

4. Blocked Condenser

The condenser, located near the front of your vehicle, cools down the refrigerant. Dirt, bugs, and debris can block airflow and cause the system to blow warm air instead of cold.

5. Broken Blend Door or Actuator

Inside your dashboard, a blend door controls whether air flows through the heater or A/C system. If this door gets stuck, you might only get warm air—no matter how cold you set it.
